Caribbean: Dominican Republic---- Cave Dive-salt haze
La Sirena Cave (Cueva Taina & Cueva del Indio) Depth: approx. 10 to 20 meters; max. 41 meters / approx 33 to 70 feet; max. 140 feet Length: total 832.6 meters / 2747.5 feet; not completely explored This cave is located next to the highway between Santo Domingo and Boca Chica on private property and requires an entry fee to visit the cave system. La Sirena was found in 1981 by Victor Cantera. The cave itself consists on two different tunnels with two entry areas. The main entry offers an easy assess with a spiral stairway and a platform with some steps into the water. The first tunnel leads to the right approx. 100 m (330 feet) and ends in a big room full with stalactites and stalagmites both under and above the water level. Most of this cave offers air pockets to ascend. The second tunnel leads to the left and after approx. 200 m (660 feet) it connects to the second cave (Cueva del Indio). Another tunnel leads north and was explored for 150m (500 feet) with an opening after 20 m (70 feet) leading into another tunnel so far explored for 422 m (1400 feet) but nobody reached the end yet. The cave system offers a great visibility with a halocline (freshwater mixes with saltwater).
